What’s your blood type?

Let’s talk about the heart for a second. Not the fake kind that you draw on your notebook, or the kind that you find in a valentine’s card (or on this blog for that matter), let’s talk about the real heart. The one full of veins and blood that pumps to your other organs and essentially keeps you alive. That heart. What’s in it? Chambers, cells, valves, and oxygen. Lots of things. If you don’t really remember what you learned in your 5th grade science class, let me give you a super quick crash course. The heart is an organ/muscle. This muscle pumps blood through the blood vessels. The blood vessels carry blood rich with oxygen and nutrients to the rest of your body. It also aids in getting rid of bad things in your system that your body no longer needs. Got it? Okay- moral of the story, we need the heart.

Now let’s talk about the other heart, the figurative heart. The one that breaks during a break-up or bursts with happiness. That heart. What’s in it? Sunshine and rainbows, eh probably not! I’d say, dreams, hurts, fears and hopes (and a little bit of sass but that just might be me, hehe). This figurative heart also pumps. It pushes out your faith, your beliefs and what you stand on to all the other parts of your life. Your faith and beliefs are like your blood. When you realize this it’s only fair to ask yourself, what’s my blood type? Before we get into this, it’s interesting to check out blood in the bible. Ha, I know that this sounds pretty gruesome, but hold on! Blood is HUGE in the bible. Going back into the Old Testament and how the blood of a lamb would cleanse the sins of the people to Jesus’ blood being spilt for our transgressions. Blood is a big deal. Hebrews 9:22 says it best-

Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

Blood matters. Blood purifies. Now going back to our science lesson we know that blood literally purifies. Takes out toxins and waste, and replaces it with nutrients and oxygen. And figuratively? The right blood can do the same - purify, cleanse, cure. So now, what’s your blood type? Is what you are pumping out of your heart and into your life full of nutrients, encouragement, love? Or is it clouding, sick, not cleansing but rather doing the opposite? Hardly any of us can say, why yes, my heart pumps great things all the time! I’m a walking ray of sunshine! No, we are sick. Our hearts are deceitful (Jeremiah 17:9), our hearts are weak (Psalm 73:26); our blood does not cleanse anything. If spilt our blood would not save the sins of man. That’s why we need a blood transfusion, that’s why we need Jesus to be our blood. Only his blood can truly cleanse our lives, infuse us with hope and joy and push out the toxins of sin.

As I’m working through letting the Lord transform my heart into whatever he wants, I have to ask myself, what does my heart pump? What’s my blood type? Even though our real blood type can never change- like, I can never go from being Type C to Type AB, our figurative blood CAN change. We can go from having the sick blood to the Jesus Blood. And that’s what I’m doing, having a blood transfusion now. So again I ask, what does your heart pump?? ☺
